Ghost Accounts: Split Bills With Someone Who Hasn’t Signed Up

Add a friend by name and phone number, no signup required. Track what they owe on OweMe and send them a one-tap UPI reminder over WhatsApp.

Every bill-splitting app has the same awkward first step: convince the other person to install it too. For a one-off trip or a friend who’s just not an app person, that’s often where the whole idea quietly dies.

Add them by name and number — that’s it

From "Add a Friend," switch to "Someone without the app," enter their name and WhatsApp number, and they’re instantly added to your friend list. No invitation, no account for them to set up, nothing for them to download.

Everything else works exactly the same

A ghost contact isn’t a second-class entry in a spreadsheet on the side — behind the scenes it plugs into the same expense splitting, balance tracking, and settlement system as every other friend. Split a dinner bill with them, add them to a group settlement, tag them to a trip — all of it works identically.

Collecting the money, without them opening anything

Since a ghost contact has no notifications to check, OweMe gives you a "Remind via WhatsApp" button instead of an in-app nudge. It opens a WhatsApp message to their real number with the amount they owe and, if you’ve added your own UPI ID, a payment link straight to you — they can pay without ever hearing the word "OweMe."

It’s the same idea as everything else on OweMe: the tracking should be effortless for you, and it shouldn’t ask anything of the person on the other end of the bill.
