About the group settle-up calculator
List each person and how much they paid. The calculator works out the net balance of everyone and then the smallest set of transfers that settles the group, so nobody sends money in circles.
What a group settlement does
After a trip or a shared month, many people owe each other small amounts. If you settle every pair separately you end up with far more payments than needed. The group settle calculator finds the smallest set of transfers that clears everyone, so six friends with a tangled set of debts often need only a few payments.
How to use it
Enter each person and what they paid, and what their share of the expenses was. The tool nets everything out so each person has one number: they are owed money or they owe money. Then it pairs people who owe with people who are owed in the fewest transfers possible.
A worked example
Imagine Asha paid 4,000 rupees, Bhavna paid 1,000 and Chirag paid nothing, and the total of 5,000 was shared equally by three people. Each share is about 1,667. Asha is owed about 2,333 and Bhavna is short by about 667, and Chirag owes 1,667. Instead of three or more transfers, Chirag pays Asha 1,667 and Bhavna pays Asha 667. Two payments settle it.
Doing it automatically
If you track the expenses in OweMe as you go, the app does this calculation for you at any time and lets you pay each person by UPI from the settle screen. The calculator is for when you have the numbers on paper and want to check them.
