About the gst and tip calculator

Pick the GST rate and whether the amount already includes GST. You see the price before tax, the tax itself and the total. It is handy when you split a restaurant or shopping bill that shows tax separately.

Adding and removing GST

GST in India is charged as a percentage of the price before tax, at common rates such as 5, 12, 18 and 28 percent. This calculator adds GST to a price or removes it from a price that already includes it, so you can see the tax amount and the amount before tax.

The two formulas

To add GST, multiply the price by the rate and add it on. For 1,000 rupees at 18 percent, GST is 180 and the total is 1,180. To remove GST from a total, divide by one plus the rate. For 1,180 at 18 percent, the price before tax is 1,000 and GST is 180. Mixing the two up is the most common mistake.

Why it matters when splitting bills

Restaurant and service bills show GST as a separate line. When friends split a bill, the tax should be shared in proportion to what each person ordered, not as an equal chunk. Working out the pre tax amount first makes it easy to split fairly, especially for an item by item split.

Use it with a group

Once you know the amounts, add the expense to a group in OweMe and choose how to split it. The app keeps the balance for everyone and you can settle by UPI. For business expenses, export the ledger to Excel or PDF and give your accountant a clean record.

How do I remove GST from a price?

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate (for 18 percent, divide by 1.18). The calculator does this when you choose "GST included".

Which GST rates are supported?

3, 5, 12, 18 and 28 percent.
