How shared flats usually go wrong
Most flat arguments are not about money, they are about memory. Who paid the electricity bill last month? Did the groceries get split or did someone just cover them? When every expense lives in a different chat, a different notebook and a different person's head, the balance becomes a matter of opinion. OweMe keeps one running balance for the flat, so the answer to "who owes whom" is always a number you can open and check.
Set the fixed bills once
Rent, WiFi, the maid, the gas cylinder and the monthly water bill repeat. Add each as a recurring expense with the people who share it, and OweMe adds it again every month without anyone remembering to. Split rent by share when one room is bigger, and split WiFi equally. If one person always pays the landlord, they simply log it as paid by them, and everyone else's balance moves by their share.
Handle the messy middle
The real work is the small stuff: milk, vegetables, a shared mixer, an unplanned delivery order. Add these as they happen, pick who was part of it, and move on. When a friend stays over or someone is away for a week, leave them out of that expense instead of doing mental arithmetic later. At the end of the month, open the balance, settle the difference by UPI from inside the app, and the flat starts the next month at zero.
Moving in or out
People come and go. A new flatmate can be added to the group and only shares expenses from the day they join. Someone leaving can settle their balance first and be removed, with the history staying intact for everyone else. You can export the whole ledger to Excel or PDF if you need a record for the landlord or a deposit discussion.
