Point, Shoot, Skip the Typing: Scanning a Receipt for the Total

OweMe can read the total off a photographed receipt directly in your browser and pre-fill the amount for you — free, private, no account needed.

Typing a total off a receipt is a small thing, but it’s exactly the kind of small thing that adds friction to actually logging an expense in the moment. So once you’ve attached a receipt photo, there’s a "Scan for amount" button that tries to save you that step.

How it actually works

It reads the text out of the photo using a free, open-source engine that runs entirely on your own device — nothing is uploaded to a server, no account or API key involved. It then looks for a line that says something like "Total" and pulls the number next to it.

Being honest about accuracy

This isn’t perfect, and it’s not trying to be. A blurry photo, bad lighting, or a receipt with several similar numbers on it can trip it up — sometimes it’ll misread a digit, sometimes it’ll grab the subtotal instead of the total. It fills in its best guess and nothing more; the amount field is always yours to check and correct before saving.

Think of it as a head start on the typing, not an accountant — a genuinely useful shortcut for a legible receipt, and a fallback to typing it yourself for the crumpled ones.
